Pentecost is the anniversary of the birth of the Church. On this day, the Church founded by Christ but made fruitful by the Paraclete, set off on her mission to propagate and spread the reign of Christ everywhere, over all nations and all peoples. For this reason, during the Octave of Pentecost, the readings for the Epistles are taken from the Acts of the Apostles, that tell of the beginnings of the Church.

After Christmas, the celebration of the birth of the Son of God, and Easter that celebrates Christ’s resurrection, Pentecost is the greatest feast of the liturgical year. This explains the privileges of its Vigil and Octave. Throughout the entire Octave, the Church wears red vestments, because this color recalls the tongues of fire and the outpouring of charity. It symbolizes the fire of divine love that inflames the souls of the faithful who receive divine life, sanctifying grace. It also represents the testimony of blood that all disciples of Christ, after the example of the Apostles, must be prepared to give, through the strength of the Holy Ghost.
