SSPX Clergy Uphold the Rights of the Church
In a victory for the rights of the Catholic Church, a United States federal court issued a preliminary injunction against the state of New York and the city of New York regarding their orders limiting participation at religious services.
Spearheaded in part by Frs. Steven Soos and Nicholas Stamos, both clerics of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), their case brought in the Northern District of New York requested the federal court to block restrictions on public religious services.
After considering the filings brought by both the plaintiffs and those representing the defendants, including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Judge Gary L. Sharpe ordered that they could not limit public worship.
As a work of the Catholic Church, the SSPX is dedicated to libertas ecclesiae (“freedom for the Church”). While respecting the lawful determinations of public authorities, the Society continues to uphold the highest law of the Church, which is the Salvation of souls.
