Eugenics Against Children With Down's Syndrome

The decriminalization of abortion, associated with the wide dissemination of tests allowing early detection of abnormalities in the fetus, has initiated the implacable logic of eugenics. The case of trisomy 21 or Down’s Syndrome is emblematic in this area.

It was inevitable, and those who are still hiding their faces are hypocrites or naive, to put it mildly. If, on the one hand, authorities allows the murder of a child in its mother’s womb, and on the other hand, laboratories are developing increasingly efficient and early tests for genetic abnormalities, one does not need to be a genius to predict what comes next.

If, finally, as is seen in many countries, the “health” system reimburses these tests, which amounts to encouraging them, the ingredients for state eugenics are present. And officials can always try to dismiss the problem by explaining that it is the parents who decide, it is not difficult to argue that they provided the weapons with which to kill.

What was so predictable and already observed here and there in several studies, has just been brought to light by an article in the European Journal of Human Genetics, published on October 31. The authors studied over a period of 5 years, from 2011 to 2015, the evolution of the percentage of births of children with Down’s syndrome for the whole of Europe. It appears that, in 5 years, this rate has fallen by 54%: it has therefore been cut in half.

This is only an average, as some countries show a very small decrease, such as Ireland, or even zero, such as Malta. On the other hand, other countries have very high rates, such as Italy (71%) or Spain (83%), two countries which are however traditionally Catholic.

In terms of absolute numbers, the authors estimate that 46,500 children with Down’s syndrome were aborted during this period.

It is frightening to think of this targeted elimination of individuals who have the disadvantage of having one extra chromosome. Added to this is the fact that the quality of life of these individuals has, over the past 20 years, been considerably improved, in particular through better education. And now some of them can be seen going to college, becoming an artist or starting a business.

Behind this nameless segregation, others are already underway or will soon be: the logic of the perfect child leads to abortions for curable or treatable diseases: cleft palate, clubfoot, or even hemophilia. While they boast about helping the disabled, on the other side of the curtain, they are purely and simply being outright legally eliminated.

This segregation is one of the most powerful engines for the dehumanization of society and for the violence that increasingly animates it. It can only get worse. Let’s not forget our Lord’s grave warning: “What you have done to the least of my brothers, you will have done to me” (Mt. 25:40).
